Message definition (Coupling ) Coupling is the method of connecting {{pll|Rail Vehicle Types|rail vehicles}} together and forming a {{pll|Rail Vehicle Types|train}}. There are a few coupling system types in existence. The one in Derail Valley is universally known as “chains and buffers”. With it, the vehicles are kept together by a tightly screwed chain, but held at a distance by shock absorbers known as buffers. There are also {{pll|Air Brake System Overview|air line hoses}} between the vehicles. When connected and with their valves open, they form a {{pll|Air Brake System Overview|shared compressed air vessel}} throughout the train, as part of the {{pll|Train Brake|train brake}} system.
