Message definition (Brake Shoes)

Brake shoes are metal parts positioned next to the wheels on {{pll|Rail Vehicle Types|rail vehicles}}. They are the main means of stopping, relied on by a few {{pll|Braking Overview|braking systems}}, such as the {{pll|Train Brake|train brakes}}, {{pll|Independent Brake|independent brakes}} and {{pll|Handbrake|handbrakes}}. Braking with brake shoes is achieved using friction to convert rotational energy of the wheels into heat. Brake shoes are pushed against the turning wheel surface, heating up in the process and slowing the vehicle down.

I ceppi del freno sono componenti metalliche posizionate vicino alle ruote del materiale rotabile. Essi rappresentano il principale sistema d’arresto, utilizzato dal freno continuo, dal freno moderabile e dal freno a mano. La frenatura si ottiene sfruttando l'attrito che converte l'energia rotazionale delle ruote in calore. I ceppi vengono spinti contro la superficie delle ruote in rotazione, riscaldandosi e riducendo la velocità del treno. Se i ceppi vengono utilizzati eccessivamente, ad esempio su convogli troppo pesanti, in presenza di pendenze molto ripide o a velocità elevate, possono surriscaldarsi, producendo un suono metallico e riducendo la loro capacità frenante. In queste situazioni un treno potrebbe iniziare a guadagnare velocità in modo incontrollato, risultando in potenziali disastri.
