機械動力總成是指使車輛運動的機械系統。這包括內燃機、傳動系統、蒸汽鍋爐等。碰撞可能會造成機械動力總成損壞，也可能由不當操作車輛導致。缺乏潤滑，或較易發生的傳動系統過熱，將可能造成嚴重損害，甚至徹底失效，使車輛無法移動，或進而導致車身損壞。
