蒸汽動力車輛使用蒸汽壓力驅動。蒸汽通常透過於火箱中燃煤來加熱爐內的水，於車輛所搭載的大型鍋爐中產生壓力。來自火箱的煙霧和熱空氣通過貫穿鍋爐的煙管，並加熱煙管周圍的水，最後從鍋爐另一端的煙囪排出。
