Message definition (Steam Overview)

Steam is then used to propel the vehicle, but also to power {{pll|Electricity|electrical}} and {{pll|Air Brake System Overview|braking}} systems. Through a series of components, such as the {{pll|Regulator|regulator}}, {{pll|Regulator|steam chest}}, {{pll|Cutoff|cutoff}}, and {{pll|Cylinder Cocks|cylinders}}, steam pushes the engine pistons, linked to the wheels. With every cycle, after pushing the pistons, used steam is released to the atmosphere. This creates a vacuum, improving {{pll|Blower & Damper|airflow}} and kindling the fire.

Per mettere in moto il rotabile, il vapore accumulato nella caldaia viene addotto nei cilindri, che di conseguenza esercitano una forza sui pistoni collegati alle ruote tramite un sistema meccanico. A ogni ciclo, dopo aver spinto i pistoni in una direzione, il vapore viene rilasciato all'esterno attraverso un condotto chiamato “scarica” (o più comunemente “scappamento”). Questo genera una condizione di vuoto parziale nel forno che, aspirando aria fresca dall'esterno, contribuisce ad alimentare ulteriormente il fuoco.
