Work trains are privately owned rail vehicles that can be acquired and used in addition to those provided by DVRT. They are:
- H1-020 (Handcar)
- Caboose
- BE2-260 (Microshunter)
- DE6-860 (Slug)
- DM1U-150 Utility Rail Vehicle
- Utility Short Flatcar
- Private Locomotives
For some of the work trains to become available, you need to buy keys to special garages in shops, find the garages and unlock them. For others, such as private locomotives, the process is different.
Being privately owned, work trains don’t go through the insurance system. Instead, they need to be serviced manually.
Once acquired, work trains can be used at will, and never despawn. Because of this, work trains are particularly suitable for customization with paint jobs, gadgets and train parts.
Work trains are typically able to be requested anywhere with the comms radio in work train mode, sometimes for a fee. If a work train is cleared with comms radio, it will go back to its default parking location.
Some work trains need to be unlocked in career mode, in order to become available in sandbox mode. In career there's usually a single instance of each work train type in the world. In sandbox, however, many instances may be spawned.
