There are several different types of braking systems that are typically present on motorized and other rolling stock, with each offering advantages for a specific purpose. They are each operated by respective control devices, usually levers or cranks that may be located inside the vehicle's {{pll|Rail Vehicle Types|cab}}, or on its exterior.
