Biohazardous materials are a type of HAZMAT cargo that may cause a national, or worldwide, health disaster when leaked . Other than potentially causing severe illness and death to those it comes in contact with, biohazardous cargo is also infectious, and its release may lead to global pandemics .

Due to the extreme level of risk involved, biohazardous cargo is usually handled by the military .
